Landfill odors may increase

EAST SPARTA - Those living in the area of Countywide Recycling and Disposal Facility, located in Pike Township of Stark County, may notice an increase in odors coming from the landfill.

According to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s Web site, landfill owner Republic Services must drill seven borings into the landfill’s south slope and former disposal area where a chemical reaction causing extreme heat is occurring.

One boring has been completed. Drilling for the remaining six was to begin Thursday and could take two weeks to complete. As the company continues to take necessary measures to control odors, the drilling activity has the potential to cause detectable odors off-site, according to the OEPA Web site.

The notice of drilling was posted Thursday on the Web site as part of the investigation into problems at Countywide.
